Successful Shipment and Preparations
The packaging and launch of two spacecraft meant for Mars exploration is a major accomplishment for Rocket Lab. These spacecraft were painstakingly built, manufactured, and tested by Rocket Lab for NASA and the Space Science Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley. They were part of the Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers (ESCAPADE) study.
Recently, the spacecraft, called Blue and Gold, at Rocket Lab’s Spacecraft Production Complex in Long Beach, California, underwent a demanding phase of construction, integration, and testing. After completing these crucial steps, the group installed multi-layer insulation (MLI) blankets and solar panels as part of the last preparations. After that, the spacecraft were expertly packed and sent to Cape Canaveral, Florida, where they would begin their next mission.
Final Preparations
Upon arrival at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Launch Complex, Rocket Lab personnel will transfer the spacecraft to a cleanroom for post-transport inspections and assessments. After these comprehensive checks, the spacecraft will be prepared for fueling in advance of their launch on Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket.
